The Wiltshire United Area
We have :-
Over 800 members
7 United Churches, 11 Methodist and 3 URC
6 Sector stipendiary ministers
2 non-stipendiary ministers
9 supernumeraries and retired ministers.
3 Ministers in other appointments
an area administrator
enthusiastic local preachers
team ministry with a supportive Executive committee
The churches are organised in 6 sectors, each of which has its own full-time stipendiary minister, with additional support from Methodist and URC non-stipendiary and supernumerary ministers.
There are close links with the many local Anglican churches throughout the Area. In all the towns we play a key role in ministerial fraternals and local families of churches. In a number of villages, services are regularly shared with our Anglican friends.
The Wiltshire United Area was formed in 2009 when the two previous united areas - West Wilts and Mid-Wilts combined, sharing a common constitution. This stipulates that:-
the Area Meeting serves as both Methodist circuit meeting and URC Area of Ecumenical Co-operation.
there shall, at any one time, be at least one Methodist and one URC minister.
the Area Meeting appoints the Area Chair (from either denomination) who acts as the lead minister for both denominations.
the position of Area Chairman is rotated on a 3 year basis, although the incumbent may be re-elected for a second three year term.
