Holt United Reformed Church

The church building dates back to 1880, when it was constructed following local fundraising and financial support from the Beavan family, owners of the J & T Beavan leather and glove company in the village.  The new church building provided larger, more modern accommodation for the congregation who had been worshipping on the site, in the then adjacent Congregational chapel building (now the church hall) since its construction around 1810.

Following the opening of the new church the original chapel building was used as the nonconformist school for the village, merging with the village Anglican school in the 1930s.  Once all children could be accommodated in the new County Council built village school the chapel became a hall and meeting space for the church, restored and converted to its current configuration in the 1970s.

The church congregation has been part of the United Reformed Church since 1972 on the union of Presbyterian and Congregational churches in England and Wales.

Other activities

The church holds a monthly book swap (with coffee, tea and cakes), on the third Saturday of each month, 9:30am – 11:30am; a coffee, chat and crafts morning on the first and third Wednesday of each month, 10:00am – 12:00 noon; and a variety of meetings and events throughout the year in the church buildings and grounds.  All are welcome to come along!

The village Brownie and Guide groups meet weekly in the church hall, and the first floor of the hall is used by the local Tools for Self Reliance group.  A range of other organisations also use our hall for their regular meetings.

Tools For Self Reliance is a national charity whose members refurbish all kinds of hand tools on site to go into dedicated tool kits for projects in Africa.  The kits are for Carpentry, Bicycle Repair, Auto Mechanics, Shoe Repair, Electricians etc.  The group also refurbish Singer sewing machines and collect haberdashery items.  Gardening tools aren’t collected but if any turn up the group will try to sell them for funds.  Any other tools donated will be gratefully received.
